Two men arraigned over death of nine Serengeti lions

Serengeti. Two people here have been arraigned for allegedly causing deaths of nine lions. The duo Mwikwabe Chacha and Mhoni Waisaya, who are residents of Nyichoka village, were taken to the Serengeti district resident magistrate court, Mara region.

Before the district resident magistrate Ismalel Ngale, the state attorney  Emmanuel Zumba said the suspect committed the crime on May 30 by killing nine lions worth Sh97 million. “The lions were poisoned” he said.
The poison, according to him, was applied to a cow carcass, adding that it was against the Wild animal Act number 5 of 2009.
The case was adjourned to June 26 and the suspects remain in remand for  the court has no mandate to hear the criminal cases whose bail exceeds Sh10 million.

The lion carcasses were seen on May 31, where seven people were arrested in connection with the killing after a crackdown by anti-poaching force and village security committee.
So far, a total of 19 lions have been killed since 2015 in the two villages of Parknyigoti and Nyichoka in Serengeti.
